Paul Potts had a dream to become an Opera singer. While he was an incredible talent, he lacked the opportunity to get his lucky break and showcase his abilities. So, when “Britain’s Got Talent” came to town in 2007, he entered as a contestant and decided to give it a shot. He won – and he won big – launching a whole new career and making millions as a professional Opera singer with an estimated net worth of $10 million.
The YouTube video of his audition has been viewed at least 188 million times and is without question one of the most inspirational videos I’ve ever watched.
If you have never seen it, you absolutely owe it to yourself to spend the next 4 minutes watching him audition by singing the infamous opera number Nessun Dorma. If you have seen it already, watch it again, it’s incredible.
0:59 – The Recognition
When you watch the video, take note of Simon Cowell’s reaction at 0:59 into the video. This was the moment when he recognized Paul’s has talent and his audition was professional grade. As the audition continues, you’ll also note Simon continuing to rub his ear. Simon does this to better listen and hear if the talent contestant is hitting the notes and carrying the tune correctly; he is being measured!
Significance of Paul Potts Singing Nessun Dorma
Nessun Dorma is one of the most popular and significant Italian opera pieces. It means “Let No One Sleep”, and thanks to Pavarotti’s performance of this at the 1990 World Cup, it is now very popular and easily recognizable. On top of this, it is super tricky and requires a vocal range and power for projection that few possess. He knew Simon Cowell would be more than familiar with the piece and know how to judge it. So in many ways, it was the perfect audition piece, but only if he could nail it.
Paul’s audition is an assertion that he belongs as a star and professional Opera singer. Sing the piece and win your dream, or lose and the world will never hear from you again.
How Does this Relate to Wealth Building?
Sometimes we have opportunities to gain wealth, launch a career, or achieve something great but we get shy or shrink. I admire the courage of Paul Potts to not only take a chance, but also pursue it through to the end. How many of us are sitting on dormant talents or abilities that we haven’t cultivated to the fullest extent? I’m not on my soapbox here, I too have talents I need to develop more.
When we honor our abilities, passions and pursuit our dream, we can find true wealth. Wealth of the pocket and wealth of the soul.
Living His Dream
In 2012 Paul Potts sang “Time to Say Good Bye” with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra along side one of the most incredible female vocale talents; absolute purity.
He has gone on to record albums and his music is available on iTunes and Spotify. Imagine, if you will, where he would be if he had not taken the risk and auditioned all those years before.
